The free Google tool is great (most Google products are). But it only gives you Google data, and relies mostly on relative graphs.
KW Magic Pro gives you Google, Yahoo and MSN data in real numerical data form. So you get a much better idea on your keyword across all the major search engines. Plus it tells you how many advertisers you're competing against, and R/S values.
All of this is combined in a really modern, slick and easy-to-use tool.

- Wordze is an all-in-one keyword research package Steve. It has a heap of different features that covers nearly every SEO and PPC avenue (dig, misspell, thesaurus, WordRank and more). It's a web-based tool so that means online access, and has a $35 per month subscription.
Keyword Magic Professional is primarily a research and competition tool (without the "extras"). But what it does, it does exceptionally well. It really is one of those rare tools that is effortless to use. Being software, it runs from your computer, so it doesn't have the mobility of WordZe. There are no monthly fees for KW Magic Pro though - it's a one-off fee of $47.
It's hard to compare the two Steve. If you only need keyword research and competition data, KW Magic rocks. If you need a tool with more specific/advanced features, WordZe is very hard to beat.

- There are no settings to alter the proxy options Paul. I didn't find any need to change these from the default settings though. Everything sailed smoothly straight out of the box.

- Keyword Magic Pro don't offer a trial version. I think it has a lot to do with the really low purchase price.
They do however offer a 60 day money-back guarantee. I doubt anyone could be disappointed with a tool of this quality for a one-off $47 fee. But if you were, you can always take advantage of their money back policy.

interesting. just a quick few quetions.
1) the searches done in the search engines, are they monthly or weekly or daily searches
2) what competition data does it display
3) which search engine does it use to determine the r/s ratio
4) when it says no of ads displayed in google is it refering to -all in title ads -
what i do like is the feature where u can right click on a keyword and dig deeper ie sub keywords and it will opoen the result in another tab. this is useful. onw can really dig deep on a keyword.

#1. The search volume is based on daily searches.
#2. The competition data displays exactly how many search engine competitors are also using the same keyword/phrases, and the number of active google ads for each keyword.
#3. KW Magic Pro uses Google to determine the r/s ratio.
#4. No. When KM Pro gathers competition data, it gets the number of Google Ads the same way. So if you choose to get competition data using quotes, it will also show the number of ads searching with quotes. (Using quotes is the best way to determine your search engine and Google ad competition).
Does it show which search engine(s) it is using It looks a lot like a newer version of one that has been around for years that you can get for free that uses the free version worktracker.com. Just curious
